CHENNAI: A high-level panel constituted at the initiative of the Prime Minister’s Office to explore unused frequency bands in the spectrum held by Defence forces as well as alternatives for quick release of the resource for mobile telephony, is scheduled to meet in another week’s time, Union Communications and IT Minister A. Telecom Entrepreneurship Development Centre: Special Telecom fund for rural areas
The UPA government proposes to set up India Telecom Innovation Fund (ITIF) to incubate technologies and support 20 ‘start up’ telecom entrepreneurs who could help benefit growth of wireless telephony in rural India. This is part of the telecom department’s move to make telecom industry expansion inclusive and take its benefits to ‘aam admi’. Telecom penetration in rural India is as low as 15 percent as against 88 percent in metros and smaller cities. ITIF will be set up with seed money from Universal Services Obligation Fund (USOF) that has about Rs 15,000 crore unused fund. However, size of the fund is yet to be decided.
Hon'ble MoCIT, Shri Kapil Sibal launches two Mobile applications developed by TCOE India
On the occasion of the Curtain Raiser Ceremony of India Telecom 2011, Mr. Sibal launched two new mobile applications. “Digital Mandi”, developed by BSNL in collaboration with IIT Kanpur, will give latest information to farmers of mandi rates of different crops to help them decide the rate and time of selling their produce. The other application developed at IIT Bombay is an intelligent "Mobile Social Networking Platform" (MSNP) similar to Facebook or Orkut based completely on mobile phones. It enables the service providers to develop personalised applications and send messages to users in the network based on their preferences such as demographic profile or interests.
