Research Projects

Short term Projects

·         Efficient power converters for battery operated telecom power plant
 - Development of a DC/DC power converter with higher efficiency, which can be used with the backup battery and diesel generator system to improve backup time in case of ac mains failure. Ideally for rural and remote BTS

·         Cellular Network Optimization
 - Phase 1: Knowledge acquisition on issues, methods and strategies for wireless network optimization

·         Automatic Selection of IMSI in international roaming
 - Study of the standard for SIM interface used in mobile telephony and mechanism by which IMSI is accessed. Identification of possibilty & implementation of such mechanism

·         IPv6 based intelligent Transport Management System using BSNL Network
 - Implementation of an IPv6 based Greenfield application for traffic monitoring, tracking and management.

·         AssetMap: A eo-locationing based telecom asset management software for BSNL
 - Development of a software for visualization of telecom assets like centres, towers, etc., integration of different knowledge modules for decision making and understanding the effect of increased radiation in modern cities due to towers and radiating devices

Medium term Projects

·         Service based multimedia content summarization and delivery in the Indian context
 - Speech source separation/recognition for effective multi media data storage, analysis and summarization. Vision based segmentation, tracking & analysis of persons and activities. Fusion framework for audio, visual & text modalities. Extraction of info from integrated data and enable intelligent data delivery

·         Implementation of IPv6 and Multicast in BSNL NIB network
 - Study of existing NIB network and ensure IPv6 & multicast compatibility and recommend up gradation. Enable IPv6 & Multicast routing in entire network in a phased manner

·         Spectrum Sensing and Co-operation for Cognitive Radio Applications
 - Design of intelligent sensing algorithms for sensing primary users, techniques for increased throughput of cognitive radio systems, design & implementation of blocks of a software defined radio

·         Protection devices for Rural and Urban Exchanges
 - Solutions for various types of protection devices for BSNL exchanges to improve reliability and functioning

·         Speech Enabled Value Added Services
 - Module 1: Speech Enabled Train name recognition system - Building a speech enabled train enquiry system. The system will recognise train names, destinations, train numbers and provide information about arrivals, departures, seat availability etc.

 - Module 2: Modelling inter-speaker variability in automatic speech recognition - Development of appropriate signal processing methods for speaker independent speech recognition systems

 - Module 3: Platform for development of interactive speech based applications - Creation of language independent platform with defined plug in architecture to allow easy building of applications using pre developed speech components for the languages in question

·         Commercially Viable Professional Courses
 - Development of courses for building up technical competence using the training infrastructure at BSNL. Target audience being fresh graduates in electrical, electronics & communication, CSE & IT

·         Content Management and Delivery over Cellphone like device
 - Development of tools and technology for deploying and accessing content intensive sites like agropedia over smartphones using low bandwidth internet connections

·         Scalable Video Coding based Wireless Video Transmission for Live Video Streaming
 - Implementation of SVC AV codec for live video coding as well as conducting training sessions for engineers in multimedia and video streaming standards and algorithms

·         Lab and Infrastrucutre for Network Testbed for Research and Education
 - Setting up of a confugurable network testbed to allow investigators to conduct experiments on a whole spectrum of networking issues like emulation of complex network topologies, conducting experiments on a live network, etc.
